New Partnership with Moroccan University to Elevate Climate Awareness

May 31, 2016 By Juliette Bohland

IMG_3853Climate Interactive has launched a new effort to expand climate change awareness across Africa in partnership with the new University Mohammed VI Polytechnic (UM6P) in Morocco.

This new partnership includes two specific projects:

    1.  The World Climate Project Africa

The World Climate Project Africa has been designed in partnership with UM6P and relies on the ongoing partnership Climate Interactive has with MIT Sloan School of Management, UML Climate Change Initiative, and others. In 2015, World Climate simulations reached almost 15,000 people worldwide. This year with COP22 happening in Morocco, Climate Interactive and the UM6P want to make sure Africans have a chance to get a better picture of the issues raised in climate negotiations.

With this new partnership, Climate Interactive will be supporting people in running simulation events across Africa to help more and more decision-makers and citizens in their efforts to tackle the challenge we face.

In the following months, Climate Interactive will be hosting trainings onsite for people interested in facilitating World Climate Simulation events. Please sign up for an upcoming event on this page, or help us schedule a training in your community.

Apart from these trainings, Climate Interactive offers webinars and a variety of resources to help you becoming a leader in increasing climate change awareness.

     2. Climate Smart Agriculture in Africa

The agricultural sector in Africa accounts for more than 15% of the continent’s GDP and represents the main source of income for 65% of Africans (UNECA, 2014). On the other hand, Africa’s food production systems are amongst the most vulnerable of the world (IPCC, 2014).

Through our expertise in system dynamics, Climate Interactive will be working with the University Mohammed VI Polytechnic to illuminate some of the roadblocks to developing Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) in Africa. The goal of this new decision support will be to identify polices and practices that will increase the understanding and adoption of climate smart agriculture techniques. The new tool will conceptualize the three facets of CSA:

  • Sustainably increase agricultural productivity and incomes
  • Adapt and build resilience to climate change
  • Reduce and remove greenhouse gas emissions

This project includes the participation of a wide range of stakeholders from agricultural professionals to academics to diverse civil society members. It is built on a comprehensive approach in order to create a scientifically rigorous tool that can be used by a variety of people.

As these two projects have just been launched, we will keep you informed about their progress as frequently as possible.

Should you have a question on this partnership or any of the above projects, please do not hesitate to contact us at africa@climateinteractive.org .
